Could Education Do More?
One of the most unfortunate but nevertheless fundamental reasons that the modern approach to food is pretty much all wrong is, I believe, due to the fact that health and nutrition has NOT (and is not) an integral part of the education system of most Western countries.
Yes, some schools do have ‘health education’ classes, but they are very few and far between, and the majority are probably still taught by a teacher who has no formal health education training themselves, who would rather be doing pretty much anything else than teaching ‘health’.
To an overwhelming extent, the public at large has always tended to take a reactive, rather than a pro-active stance to all health matters.
That is, rather than prevent health problems ever occurring through a healthy lifestyle based on exercise and a sensible diet, most people just wait to get sick and then ask the Doctor to do something about it!
The majority of the public has left the responsibility for their health to Doctors and to those who process their food, assuming that the former will ‘fix ‘em up’ and that the latter will somehow make sure that food is ‘good for them’ before it reaches their table (or local burger shop)
So it is that when you get sick, you go and see the doctor.
Or, when you are hungry, you prise the top off a can of food or go to the nearest fast food joint.
The public has not been taught or trained that they must start taking responsibility for their own health right from when they can first walk and talk.
It is also a good idea to start facing some other often stark realities too.
Doctors make a very good income treating you after you get sick.
A percentage of these salaries will come from your taxes.
And, the food processors do not care one little bit about you or your health, however much they might protest to the contrary.
They just want your money, period.
Whether you like it or not, you are responsible for your own health and that of the family who rely on you to care for them, especially those too young to make such decisions for themselves.
So, placing the responsibility for your health and theirs, perhaps the most precious gift that you can ever have, into the hands of big business – does that sound like a wise decision to you?
